Cell Division Webquest

Picture
In this webquest, you will visit five different websites that will ask you to investigate, read, and answer questions based on the information learned during this chapter.  To start, click on the file below and open it up.  Print off a copy of this document for your group. Review the scale below to identify your understanding within this unit.

Cell Division Scale:

4
Students will be able to:
  • Explain that complex interactions among the different kinds of molecules in the cell cause distinct cycles of activities, such as growth and division. Note that cell behavior can also be affected by molecules from other parts of the organism, such as hormones.
  • Explain how the rise and fall of cyclins has an effect on the cell cycle and production of cancer.

3
Students will be able to:
  •  Identify the relationship between cancer, mitosis and asexual reproduction. Identify that cells must go through checkpoints during the cell cycle, but error can occur causing cells to divide uncontrollably.
  • Show that when mutations occur in sex cells, they can be passed on to offspring (inherited mutations), but if they occur in other cells, they can be passed on to descendant cells only (noninherited mutations).
  • Compare and contrast the processes of cell division (mitosis and meiosis).
  • Describe mitosis and its relation to the growth and maintenance of an organism
  • Look at a diagram and identify the specific stages of the cell cycle including the stages of mitosis (PMAT). Describe specific events occurring in each of the stages of the cell cycle and/or phases of mitosis, including cytokinesis.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of sexual vs. asexual reproduction. Recognize that genetic variation can occur from such processes as crossing over, jumping genes, and deletion and duplication of genes.

2
Students will be able to:
  • Identify different types of cancer (skin, brain, bone, etc.) and items that may cause cancer (smoking, radiation, etc.).
  • Explain why only mutations occurring in gametes (sex cells) can be passed on to offspring.
  • Describe growth and development in terms of increase in cell number, cell size, and / or cell products.
  • List the parts of the cell cycle (Interphase, Mitosis, Cytokinesis) but have limited understanding of their individual parts.
  • Compare and contrast the differences between sexual and asexual reproduction.
